Brooklyn’s Meagan Rodriguez, aka QRTR, learned how to use CDJs in a smoky discotèca an hour before DJing in front of a crowd of dancing Portuguese club-goers. She returned to the same club years later, but this time, she had her own original music to share.
Bouncing between high-energy DJ mixes and hypnotic original live sets, QRTR has shared the stage with the likes of Tokimonsta, Tiga, Phantoms, Galantis, and Oliver, to name a few. QRTR has performed at some of New York’s most renowned nightclubs, including The Brooklyn Mirage, Output (RIP), Good Room, Elsewhere, and Bossa Nova Civic Club. In 2018, she debuted her live setup while headlining at Brooklyn Bazaar — weaving together an hour-long live journey of remixed original tracks. While her Brooklyn home base will always be número um, QRTR has toured internationally, performing in Portuguese open-air clubs and smoky Parisian lounges.
Though her original tracks do not place within a specific genre, DJ Mag describes QRTR’s music as a meeting between “art house film composer and basement rave.” QRTR’s debut album, Drenched, was released on LA-based record label Dome of Doom and is just the beginning of her sonic journey. Dubbed as “a spacey body of work that spans house, ambient and techno” by Mixmag, the album also received support from BBC Radio 6’s Tom Ravenscroft, Nina Las Vegas, Magnetic Magazine, CoS, XLR8R, Resident Advisor, Pitchfork, and more. Acclaim and praise started well before Drenched, with her 2018 single, “DRIVER,” premiering on Jubilee’s BBC Radio 1 show. Australia-based Pilerats previously wrote that the “slamming house stomper” is part of “a really good wave of sweaty house coming out of Brooklyn at the moment.” One of her latest collaborations premiered on Earmilk, a “lush electronica” remix with indie-folk artist Nora Rothman that is both “ethereal and powerful.” Extensive years working in the film world have shaped her music sonically and conceptually, adding a tonality and design to her works that is rare in dance music.
While on stage, QRTR radiates an effervescent magnetism that garners a genuine community. Technically brilliant and agile, she is a creative force that blends international beats into intoxicating otherworldly soundscapes that leave the listener with no choice but to dance.
